HUMANS
The Chief
The village chief. Despite her age of 86 she’s a spry and level-headed leader whom the villagers- both humans and youkai alike- have come to respect. Little is known of her life before the village (including her name), but those that have known her the longest often describe her past as harrowed. One would think she’s fallen under the radar of the governments of the mainland with time, but to this day there are still faded wanted posters of her in busier parts of the major cities. There are whispers of tattoos on her arms, stripes of the capital that signify her status as a criminal. What crimes has she committed? That secret is hers alone.
Tasuke A self-proclaimed “enlightened artist”, originally from Ōtsu, and specializes in “Ōtsu-e” style paintings as well as traditional ukiyo-e. He owns a little shop where he sells not only his work but also various mediums for budding artists. He always has some sort of odd or extravagant request for newcomers in exchange for something only slightly equal in price. It’ll be worth it, he promises! His reason for living in Kishima? Apparently something about a rivalry with a fellow artist gone wrong…
Kinu & Kana Because what would a village be without a set of notorious twins? Twin girls to be exact who can be seen peering from corners, spying on your daily activities with giggles behind cupped palms. Despite their penchant for mischief (and the occasional pickpocketing) the girls are relatively harmless and will even give you small (probably stolen) trinkets if you’re nice enough. One might think, what are two young children doing in this village on their own? Their response? In perfect unison: “Adults aren’t always right, you know.”
Hideo The local smithy, specializing not only in weapons but also common household wares and furniture. He stands at an impressive 223.52 centimeters high and rarely raises his voice above a murmur. It can be a little hard to hear him but he has no problem bending over to loom above you and speak more clearly. For a small price (or sometimes free) he will offer you an opportunity to help him out at his shop or merely hone your skills in his yard. He’s a mild-mannered soul with seemingly no ties to anyone or anything outside of the village. Just don’t ask him what made him decide to stay here– he will quite literally shut down and not move for the rest of the day, which has unfortunately made him a common target for the resident twins.
YOUKAI
Kotomi A veteran courtesan who once called Nakanochō her home, a past Oiran of high stature– or so she says. This Futakuchi-onna is well known amongst the villagers as the resident party girl, always up for a drink or a game of go (or both). Up front she has a confectionary sweet demeanor, but her second mouth belies a far more crude and honest personality, one that some say is capable of looking through any lie. Despite its rowdy nature Kotomi is a professional through and through, and is happy to offer assistance to any hapless newcomer.
Tsuda A one-eyed elderly Hitotsume-kozō draped in monk’s robes, he slumps about the village in a perpetual state of despair and melancholy. One would be hard-pressed to miss the literal cloud of gloom following him wherever he goes, but what he lacks in positivity he makes up for in mystic skill. The village chief often consults with him on securing the village’s protective barriers and accommodating the various spirits that wander in and out of the village. He has wards and trinkets alike to make your stay more comfortable and also provides paper messengers for free. A formidable asset to the village, his only downside is his self-deprecating nature.
Matsu The village chief’s loyal assistant and unofficial scribe. Diligent and meticulous almost to a fault she oversees most of the village activities and acts as a proxy between the chief and local vendors. If you have questions about literally anything then be assured she has the answers. Those that have laid eyes on her will tell you Matsu is by far the most beautiful woman they’ve ever seen and looks startlingly human, save for the two wooden branches that protrude from the sides of her head like antlers. She is a very old forest spirit and has been here for a very long time. Perhaps if she warms up to you she’ll tell you of how the village came to be…?
Jounou The local annoying kappa. As far as kappa go he’s fairly harmless, which may have contributed somehow to his permanent residence in the village. A lover of inappropriate jokes and jabs, he can usually be found pestering the villagers or trying to sneak into someone’s kitchen looking for cucumbers. He’s also a horrible gossip and can usually be seen swapping secrets and stories with Kotomi over drinks. If you plan on having any secrets here it'd be best to steer clear away from him, lest you find your dirty laundry aired out for all to hear.
